Description

A nice example of the famous iceland spar from Helgustadir. Old material from Krantz. The scalenohedron which is quite clear and transparent hosts a small sheave of stilbite near the top. The Helgustadir mine is known as occurrence of optical-grade calcite since 1669. "Iceland spar" was mined in an organized way from 1855 and the regular mining ended in 1925. In 1975 the location received the status of a "natural monument" where collecting is strictly forbidden. Rare to obtain nowadays.
