Description

This is an old classic from the 19th century from a famous locality: Intense red realgar crystals settle on matrix. Despite the low hardness of realgar this old timer has only limited damage. The nice old label gives Moldova (could be from Florimunda Mine) as locality. The Florimunda mine was operated in the late 19th and early 20th century by the "Priv. Österr.-Ungarischen Staatseisenbahngesellschaft". The Florimunda mine is mentioned in some old reports, for instance Franz Schafarzik. (1903): "Kurze Skizze der Geologischen verhältnisse und Geschichte des Gebirges am Eisernen Tore an der unteren Donau" in FÖLDTANI KÖZLÖNY No. 23 as a mine which yielded orpiment and realgar. Specifically on realgar from there one may read (german): BEITRÄGE ZUR KRYSTALLOGRAPHISCHEN UND CHEMISCHEN KENNTNIS DER MINERALIEN IM KRASSÓSZÖRÉNYER MONTANBEZIRK from A. Liffa & K. Emszt, first chapter "Realgar aus Ujmoldova", 1920, SUPPLEMENT ZUM FÖLDTANI KÖZLÖNY, vol. L.
