Pyrrhotite & Calcite

Classic Locality

Description Tabs

Description
Locality:
Morro Velho Mine, Nova Lima, Minas Gerais, Brazil
Size Range:
Cabinet (10-18 cm)
Size:
10 × 10.5 × 6.5 cm
Description

A classic specimen from Morro Velho exhibiting whiteish rhombohedral calcite crystals (other specimens of this whiteish appearance have been analyzed to be unusual coloured siderite, but i did not test it and the accompanying label states calcite) with numerous crystals of pyrrhotite scattered on. The pyrrhotite shows excellent hexagonal crystallization forming thin plates with bronze to reddish tarnished colour. I checked the specimen with a loupe and there maybe some cubanite too as it is well known in this paragenesis of the Morrho Velho mine. A 1970s specimen in good condition! 583 g.
