Description

Nice (and meanwhile rare) example of a modified cube of grey metal lustrous galena on sphalerite from the Nanisivik Mine. The mine worked on a Precambrian Mississippi Valley type massive lead zinc sulfide deposit, hosted in carbonate rock, that was subsequently reworked.

The mine was famous for its pyrite finds with incredibly diverse forms of pyrite which are unique to this locality. Other mineral samples were scarcely available - including the type of this specimen. The mine closed in 2002 and was one of the most northern base metal mines of the world, located approx. 750 km north of the Arctic Circle. Very similar specimens came from the Polaris mine.
