Description

An interesting locality specimen: grey semi-lustrous galena cubes on massive pyritic/chalcopyritic sulfide matrix from this classic german locale. The Meggen mine worked on a SEDEX deposit, and closed in 1992. Started as an iron mine in the 17th century and producing pyrite, the ore was used since the 19th century for the prduction of sulphuric acid. The associated barite was mined since 1875, and the mine became one of the world's leading baryte and pyrite producers after World War I. Since 1950, the focus went to the associated Zn and Pb ore. Most of the collectible minerals originate from younger faults which were mineralized by remobilization of the primary ore. Rare stuff and increasingly harder to obtain, collected by Paul Hanses in the late 1960s.
