Cinnabar

ex Dr. F. Krantz

Description Tabs

Description
Locality:
Shikoku Island, Japan
Size Range:
Miniature (4.5-7 cm)
Size:
5.6 × 3.6 × 2.3 cm
Description

Japanese minerals, particularly the older classics, are increasingly hard to obtain. This specimen is a 19th century japanese dark red cinnabar (in part twinned microcrystals) on "quartzitic" matrix, having an old label stating: Zinnober in Quarzit (cinnabar in quartzite), Higashidani, Prov. Awa (Prov. means province, could be prefecture?), Japan. I tried to nail down the locality with the help of some experts for japanese minerals but with no luck. A possible provenance may be a mercury mine in the Tokushima prefecture (which was formerly Awa province; comm. A. Petrov). Intersting oldie though.
