Description

Already the size is spectacular! 11cm tall, with small matrix at the base - it consists of tiny Quartz crystals in combination with Albite. The Epidote is also end-pointed at the bottom! All faces of this highly aesthetic assemble are highly lustrous; like mirror-finished. When I photographed it was not difficult to show luster - the problem was more not to become over-lighted! The upper edge of the aggregate in the middle is covered with a second generation micro-crystals of Epidote, they show a fresh-green color. The texture of the crystals is fantastic and overall this piece is really amazing! It is very difficult to get groups or crystals on matrix and the locality is non-productive since now 4 years! For a longer period two Austrian Strahlers (Hannes and Gerhard Hofer) had a permit from the government to work there - they are the only two people who have this permit, the locality belongs to the state. But even with heavy tools they didn´t found anything during the last 4 years - and they try really hard. Epidote from Knappenwand was always rare, highly appreciated world-wide and so hard to obtain. But now - after 4 years without any new discovery - this material will even become more rare and prices will raise more and more.  About the condition of the piece: there are 2 repairs at the lower third. Unrepaired crystals or groups on matrix are more or less not available, there do not exist more than a fist full. Even the most famous piece (called the bridge) at the Museum for history of Nature in Vienna is repaired several times. Front and sides do not show any significant damage. The back-side shows a diagonal contact in the middle - there must have been former inter-grown crystals, so yo see a negative imprint - but that´s also not a damage. Overall - for size and assemble I would say this piece is in very good shape and condition!
