Description

First about the history: The Austrian author and collector Michael Wachtler (he wrote some books about alpine minerals and many articles for Lapis magazine and the Extra-editions of Lapis Magazine about minerals of Carinthia and Ziller Valley) planned to write an article about the old, historic Gold Mine Brusson. The mine was discovered in 1899 and was productive from 1903 to 1906. Then from 1930 to 1040 some local miners worked there and finally the mine became forgotten.

Michael Wachtler took his friend Georg Kandutsch with him – he is also collector and a prominent alpinist. Further two Italian brothers belong to his team for the exploration – they had experience with the exploration of old shafts. Michael figured out (in old archives) that there must be four levels and the old shafts should be about 1600 meters long.

After some days of exploration they made a rest in a collapsed area at the crossway of two shafts. They sit down, have a little lunch and then they decided to turn on their detectors to figure out, if there is still Gold in these old shafts. And then it sounds like a detector concert! They were literally sitting on Gold. They turn on all lights they had and recognized that the quartz rocks (which they used at their seats) were full with gold, on and inside those rocks were full of Gold. They don´t have to use tools, they just had to pack their back-packs and carry them out. Finally they found 28 kilogram of Gold! But now to this particular specimen - I got it from the grand-son of the guy who owned the mining-rights! From all Gold specimen which were found during this exceptional discovery the combination with Galena is unique! The specimen is out of the collection if the Italian guy, who owned the mining rights.
