Description

First a little locality information - the Orange river is the second longest river of entire Africa - the spring is in Lesotho and it is the natural border between Lesotho and Namibia. The localities along the river are well known for Quartz, ferruginous Quartz and Amethyste - Fluorite came only rare, except the famous discoveries of Riemvasmaak, which is located at the South African side of Orange River - exactly at the most eastern-South corner of Namibia. Discoveries of Fluorites on the Namibian side were exceptional and most times only in very low quantity. Most specimen ever found developed octahedral crystals, cubes came only in exceptions. There was on e small discovery with tiny cubes around 1cm with dark purple zonings along the edges and some isolated finds with a fist full of pieces - but nothing really relevant. Only one time - in 1995 - one pocket with large, exposed cubes was discovered. You can read about this discovery in the third edition of Bode´s Namibia book.  This particular piece shows  complete exposed crystals, which are up to 28mm on edges, that is a fantastic size for the entire region - there is nothing compare-able; not on the Namibian side neither on the South African side. And the cubic habit is also exceptional! The crystal shows light green color with dark violet zonings along the edges and also minor sharp zonings in the center. The faces are etched and on satiny luster, contrast to milky Quartz crystals is sweet, too and the assemble looks very aesthetic. The specimen is out of the famous Soltau-collection.
