Cuprite

Classic Locality

Description Tabs

Description
Locality:
Onganja Mine, Seeis, Windhoek Rural, Khomas Region, Namibia
Class:
Crystals on Matrix
Size Range:
Small miniature (3-4.5 cm)
Size:
3 × 2.6 × 3 cm
Description

The main crystal is 26mm across – very large for mineral and locality! The assemble is also excellent, isolated crystals set on minor matrix with fine contrast. At the backside one further crystal is inter grown. Cuprite shows very sharp termination, more sharp as seen on photography – each edge all around is definitely sharp! When these superb, large cuprite crystals came out in the 1970's, they were instant classics. Many of the specimens from that find had their malachite coatings removed. While this revealed the red glow of the cuprite, the faces lacked luster— but I would say a poor substitute to the textured and subtle green variations this piece possesses. Based on crystal dimension and assemble I would rank this one very high for this discovery. Rare old classic in best quality!
