Locality:
Boi Morto Mine, Pedro II, Piauí, Brazil
Class:
Single Crystal
Size Range:
Thumbnail (1-3cm)
Size:
2.1 × 2.2 × 0.6 cm
Description

The exact dimensions are: 21,4 x 20,5 x 6 mm, the weight is 15,2 carat. The exploration of the opal in the Boi Morto began in the 60s and in 2005 the work of recovering the mine was started, which was greatly degraded due to the action of foreigners who came to Pedro II to extract the opal. Material is rare and hard to obtain - and it is of high relevance: it is the only relevant opal-locality in entire South America and compare-able quality only comes from Ethiopia and - of course - Australia. The specimen is multi-colored and shows intense flashes in red (the most appreciated and most valued color for opal), also in electric blue, neon-green and several other color-tones. Excellent quality, well cut and polished all around.
