Description

The Beryl-family: blue - Aquamarine, green - Emerald, pink - Morganite, colorless - Goshenite, yellow - Heliodore; finally but unique: red - Bixbite. For many years there was always a confusion; red Beryl was named Bixbite, a black metallic mineral from the same area was named Bixbyite. Just one letter difference, both minerals named in honor to the famous mineralogist who explored the area: Maynard Bixby. To avoid this confusion menawhile the only regular name for red Beryl is „Red Beryl“, Bixbite was cancelled.

It is the most rare member of the Beryl family. It is unique world-wide and the loaclity is just 500 to 1000 meters in square. This makes Red Beryl so special - imagine a mineral that exist only on just a small spot, and not just a black and ugly oddity; a gemstone in a spectacular color! The last relevant discoveries was more than 25 years ago, the locality is defunct! So rare, just from this small area - and no new stuff since decades. This cause this high relevance and also the crazy prices on the market. Nearly nothing available, all from old finds, most material stored in collections. This particular specimen features two main crystals - one 15mm tall, the second 11mm tall. Both razor sharp terminated, highly lustrous and in this most amazing dark red-purple color. Further around 10 smaller crystals in same color and quality between 3 and 9mm. Wonderful contrast to light rhyolite matrix.
