Description

First I have to tell you about the geology of Weisseck and about the discovery of Ice-Cleft. Weisseck mountain consists of lime-stone and Dolomite marble. Water (rain or melted water from snow and ice) can drain through the rock and wash out minerals like sulphur - as result you have for example sulphur acid, which cause an etching process.  This is the reason why nearly all Fluorites from Weisseck are etched, only a few specimen which were protected in a fist full of special pockets or on the roof of a pocket show partly glossy or semi lustrous faces. During 400 years there were no really lustrous fluorites like we know from China or UK - until the discovery of "Ice-Cleft". The specimen is developed as floater, it consists of razor sharp terminated cubes with wonderful texture, the backside is partly crusted with Calcite and a few scalenodrons are also inter-grown. There is no mother rock which would decrease or reduce the translucency and so it is possible to show the color of the crystals even with minor backlight. Each crystal shows a very intense internal color - dark purple, which reminds to Amethyste from Uruguay. Along all edges you can see a completely colorless, thin (about 1mm) zoning. It is really very difficult to show luster, translucency and color on a photo, so I only can assure that the specimen looks much more impressive in person. This is really nothing common, Ice-cleft produced much less quantity than Summit Cleft and the quality of this material is absolutely exceptional - again; this was the only discovery of lustrous fluorites in entire history; nothing compare-able exist from the whole region. Undamaged. This is a mayor piece for the locality - ex Reinhold Bacher Coll., Ex Anton Watzl senior Coll., Ex Martin Gruell Coll.
