Fluorite & Quartz

Description Tabs

Description
Locality:
Akchatau Mine, Akchatau, Shet, Karaganda Oblast, Kazakhstan
Class:
Crystals on Matrix
Size Range:
Cabinet (10-18 cm)
Size:
14.5 × 12.1 × 7.4 cm
Largest Crystal:
5.00cm
Description

The matrix is formed like wedge. Along the left hand side you can see 4 large, massive octahedrons – all over 5cm in diamter. The upper one and the lower one are both 57mm across. All crystals show a wonderful texture with uncountable micro-steps, all of them sharp terminated and glossy. On one side the faces are are powdered with a layer of purple fluorite. So we have contrast on the crystals between black and purple faces and contrast of dark octahedrons and lighter matrix. Usually such large specimen – specially from Akchatau – are not really aesthetic. And this one is so impressive and the dimension and the exposed crystals look much more tridimensional in person!
The matrix is covered with tiny, sparkling Quartz crystals on light beige layer underneath. The fluorite crystals are well developed and more sharp as you see on my photography. The three lower ones are on matrix. Concerning the upper one: 50% are freestanding and also well shaped backside. The backside of the specimen is covered with Fluorite crystals, which all show this purple layer. No significant damages to report, only lower backside was extracted from the rock.
