Description

Hüttenberg is an old, historic mining area – iron was mined there. Really of relevance in it´s history – ever heard about boric iron? The high quality iron (ferrum noricum) , which was used for Roman Army came from Hüttenberg and Erzberg. First mentioned in old documents from 1266! But we know about mining even before the old Romans, so this is really a historic locality. Now more about this excellent specimen: The matrix consists of siderite, which developed sharp terminated crystals. These crystals are coated with a thin layer of light chalcedony. Along the edges and at the left hand side tiny calcites frame some edges and cover a few faces. The calcite crystals show partly a red-brown (iron) layer. Great contrast and a fine combination of 3 minerals.
