Description

Great Austria classic, for long time the theory was that first discoveries go back to 1845. But after some archeological excavations in the last years we know that first finds were made about 2000 (!!!) years ago. The vein has a dimension of 0.5 - 1 m in thickness and a confirmed length of 400 m. The estimated length is 1000 m! This vein is provided in the "Maissauer Granit", a part of the Thayapluton. The locality is of highest relevance - the Amethyst from Maissau developed about 280 million years ago, one of the oldest amethyste on earth. Much more older than rock crystals from Alps for example (which are about 8 million years old). They show a very significent color, which makes them even more special. I show one photo without backlit, one with backlit, which shows this remarkable color. It is not possible to dig there any more, the area belongs to a museum. Very rare and highly appreciated from collectors. This particular specimen is a polished, cut plate. Uncut specimen are white, caused by a white layer intergrown to surface. The material needs to be cut to see internal color.
