The very rare Motukoreaite is a hydrous magnesium-aluminium sulfate and belongs to the Wermlandite group. The Wermlandite group is part of the Hydrotalcite supergroup, whose members are possibly better known, but are also not common. The mineral is named after the place where it was first found, the Motukorea, a small island north of the main northern island of New Zealand. Motukorea means in Maori "Oystercatcher Island" and is referred to on maps as Browns Island. Motukoreaite has only been discovered at six locations worldwide, with the Stradner Kogel is the best locality. Motukoreaite is always found in dull white balls consisting of thin trigonal crystals, which standing on edges.
