Description

An aesthetic insight deep into our earth's interior!

Green enstatite crystals and purple coloured pyrope form this unique rock type, a narrow band within a garnet peridotite body exposed close to the village of Midsund on the island of Otrøya, Western Norway. These rocks represent the earth's upper mantel material from a depth of more than 400 km. They surfaced during the collision of two continental plates approx. 450 million years ago forming the caledonian mountain chain of Norway. The light green spots are supposed to be chromian diopside.

I sampled this material in 1976.
