Description

This specimen features 98% “mutant” fluorite – i.e. tabular, prismatic etc. The closest things to a cube are some isolated dolomite rhombs. (Well OK – there are a few almost cubic fluorites mixed in.) The crystals may be micro (<= ca 2 mm), but you will not see many fluorites – of any size - with this habit. (That’s not to say that flattened fluorites don’t exist elsewhere. The Llamas Quarry in Spain is one such locality, but even there, that’s not the typical habit, and the crystals are not as flattened as these.)

The first pair of photos (FOV 2.1 x 3.4 mm) shows perhaps the largest of these crystals (ca 2.1 mm). (The small yellowish crystals are dolomite – not fluorite.)

The second pair of photos (FOV 5.9 x 4.7 mm) is a broader view showing more of the crystals.

In addition to the pale purple fluorite and nearly colorless dolomite, there is a minor amount of donnayite-(Y) in the form of grayish “cigars”. A couple of these are shown in the third pair of photos (FOV 3.5 x 2.3 mm). The “big cigar” is 1.4 mm long.

According to qualitative EDS (see the “Analysis” tab) on another specimen from a similar, near-by, find, the donnayite is mixed in with FeSO4 and/or pyrite. It is typical at MSH for donnayite to be sprinkled with and to include pyrite. (You can see a lot of it in the photo.) It isn't clear just from the “quick and dirty” EDS whether any or all of the Fe and S is coming from such pyrite, or if some the pyrite has altered to an FeSO4 mineral.

Single item shipping weight (with TN case) is 3.5 oz (99 g). For shipments outside the USA, up to a total weight < 8 oz (225g), this can be combined with another small item or two from this or other auctions for the same postage. If you don’t need the TN case, you can save about 0.3 oz in weight which could be used for something else.

Note: ‘En masse”, the fluorite looks typically purple, but individual crystals viewed through a scope are mostly just pale purple.

Within the USA, postage for total weights up to 13 oz ranges from $4.25 to $6.50 (including packing etc) regardless of destination. Above 13 oz, I will use “own box” Priority Mail. The rate, including packing, varies by destination from $7.25 to $9.50.

Seller's terms and conditions

In addition to the standard terms and conditions, please note the following. Almost all IDs are visual. While in most cases the ID is obvious, there may be cases where it is not. If you are doubtful about a particular ID, please ask for more information. Or do not bid! Similarly, if you are not sure that the specimen meets your criteria, do not bid. I have tdone the best I can with the photos. Nevertheless, if you are not happy with a specimen for any reason, I will refund the bid price – but not the shipping costs (unless the fault is clearly mine) – if the specimen is returned. This policy applies even if analysis of the specimen shows that my ID was incorrect. When in doubt, ask - or don’t bid. Note that most crystals at MSH and Varennes are micros - even if on large specimens. Please pay attention to the stated sizes. Any customs duties, fees etc. are the responsibility of the buyer.
