Description

Cryolite is a rare mineral at MSH, having been found only a couple of times, most recently in the Poudrette pegmatite – which this specimen is from. (Found 8/16/17).

The crystals on this specimen are small and etched, and thus somewhat lumpy looking. But that’s typical of much of the cryolite from this find. Euhedral, un-etched crystals exist, but they are generally also small. Larger well formed crystals are almost invariably coated by a crust of zeolites. Most cryolite from MSH has a pale blueish SW UV response, but I don’t know if that is from the cryolite itself or from a coating.

FOV in the first pair of photos is 5.6 x 4.1 mm. The larger crystal is 2.5 mm in greatest diameter. Cryolite from MSH is difficult to photograph due to the lack of contrast with the matrix. In this case, the crystals sit on the edge of the specimen, which allowed for a contrasting dark background.

The next photo (FOV 3.3 x 2.3 mm) shows two more lumpy cryolite crystals ca 2.0 mm in maximum diameter. The white blade on the right is albite.

There are several more cryolite crystals on the specimen. One or two of them are more sharply formed. They appear to be cubo-octahedral, but I wasn’t able to get an acceptable photo. These crystals are ca 1.5 mm or so. There are also numerous smaller “rice grain” crystals.

The color of the full view photo is more accurate than the close-ups, which came out a bit greenish.

Single item shipping weight (with MM case) is 2.8 oz (79 g). For shipments outside the USA, up to a total weight < 8 oz (225g), this can be combined with other items from this or other auctions for the same postage.

Within the USA, postage for total weights up to 13 oz ranges from $4.25 to $6.50 (including packing etc) regardless of destination. Above 13 oz, I will use “own box” Priority Mail. The rate, including packing, varies by destination from $7.25 to $9.50.

Seller's terms and conditions

In addition to the standard terms and conditions, please note the following. Almost all IDs are visual. While in most cases the ID is obvious, there may be cases where it is not. If you are doubtful about a particular ID, please ask for more information. Or do not bid! Similarly, if you are not sure that the specimen meets your criteria, do not bid. I have tdone the best I can with the photos. Nevertheless, if you are not happy with a specimen for any reason, I will refund the bid price – but not the shipping costs (unless the fault is clearly mine) – if the specimen is returned. This policy applies even if analysis of the specimen shows that my ID was incorrect. When in doubt, ask - or don’t bid. Note that most crystals at MSH and Varennes are micros - even if on large specimens. Please pay attention to the stated sizes. Any customs duties, fees etc. are the responsibility of the buyer.
