Description

This item consists of two fragments, both from the same find of May 1998. Both fragments have abundant pale green polylithionite. For the Saint-Amable sill, these are good examples of polylithionite. The best rosettes are on the smaller fragment (0.9 x 2.0 x 1.1 cm). In addition to more polylithionite, the larger fragment (1.3 x 3.0 x 1.4 cm) also has several PSMs of birnessite/ranciéite after sérandite of various habits. (According to László Horváth , the PSMs are always a mixture of birnessite and ranciéite.) These PSMs are uncommon to moderately rare here, found only in weathered cavities near the top of the sill. Like pretty much everything in this quarry, the “crystals” are small. You will need at least 20X to view them.

The first photo (FOV 2.4 x 3.6 mm) shows one of the aggregates of birnessite/ranciéite PSMs after sérandite. The stuff is rather brittle and the bases of the crystals are bruised. But along the top there are several “crystals” that are well-formed and in very good shape. Overall, the largest “crystal” is ca 1.25 mm tall. The unbroken part is about 0.75 mm

The next photo (FOV 2.4 x 3.7 mm) is a different view of the same aggregate.

The other birnessite/ranciéite aggregates are pretty beat-up, although here and there some good “crystal” section can be seen.

The third photo (FOV 1.3 x 1.3) is an extreme close-up (equivalent to 50X via scope) of an interesting PSMs after a group of long prismatic radiating sérandite crystals. This habit is much less common than the others. But the crystals are tiny – the spray measures ca 0.9 x 0.8 mm.

The next pair of photos (FOV 6.4 x 4.5 mm) shows some of the best polylithionite. Individual rosettes are ca 1 mm in diameter.

In addition to the polylithionite and birnessite/ranciéite, there is rather mangy aegirine, altered, hollow, analcime that looks a lot like terskite/hydroterskite, and a bit of not very attractive manganoneptunite.

Single item shipping weight (with TN case) is 3.3 oz (94g). For shipments outside the USA, up to a total weight < 8 oz (225g), this can be combined with other items from this or other auctions for the same postage. If you don’t need the TN case, you can save about 0.3 oz in weight which could be used for something else.

Within the USA, postage for total weights up to 13 oz ranges from $4.25 to $6.50 (including packing etc) regardless of destination. Above 13 oz, I will use “own box” Priority Mail. The rate, including packing, varies by destination from $7.25 to $9.50.

Seller's terms and conditions

In addition to the standard terms and conditions, please note the following. Almost all IDs are visual. While in most cases the ID is obvious, there may be cases where it is not. If you are doubtful about a particular ID, please ask for more information. Or do not bid! Similarly, if you are not sure that the specimen meets your criteria, do not bid. I have tdone the best I can with the photos. Nevertheless, if you are not happy with a specimen for any reason, I will refund the bid price – but not the shipping costs (unless the fault is clearly mine) – if the specimen is returned. This policy applies even if analysis of the specimen shows that my ID was incorrect. When in doubt, ask - or don’t bid. Note that most crystals at MSH and Varennes are micros - even if on large specimens. Please pay attention to the stated sizes. Any customs duties, fees etc. are the responsibility of the buyer.
