Description

This specimen features a small, but wonderful “garland” of molybdenite rosettes with a single crystal of “eudialyte” from a find which produced khomyakovite, manganokhomyakovite and ferrokentbrooksite. Which of those is the “eudialyte” on this specimen? I don’t know, and it would not be easy (or cheap) to find out for sure (via WDS and perhaps more). But qualitative EDS shows “significant” W and Mn > Fe, as would be expected for manganokhomyakovite. But is the W in the right “site” and is there really enough of it? I can’t tell from this scan. (However, while the W peak may look rather puny, according to the analyst, the high energy peak of W is not well-detected by this equipment and the low energy peak is "buried" under Si, so the peak is actually “significant”. (See the “Analysis’ tab.) Somewhat less than half of the specimens that I was fortunate enough to have properly analyzed turned out to be one of the khomyakovites. That’s actually pretty good odds – but it isn’t a guarantee.

In any case, the combination of remarkable molybdenite rosettes with the bright red-orange “eudialyte” psedo-octahedron is fantastic regardless of the precise “eudialyte” species. There are also some small, well-formed, prisms of an amphibole, possibly in the actinolite-tremolite series. This particular specimen was not analyzed, but I have provided a scan for another specimen from the same find.

FOV in all of the first four photos is 2.3 x 3.5 mm; the largest molybdenite rosette is 0.75 in diameter, and the “eudialyte” pseudo-octahedron measures ca 0.8 mm tip-to-tip.

Single item shipping weight  is 2.7 oz ( 76 g). For shipments outside the USA, up to a total weight of 8 oz (225 g), this could be combined with other items from this or future auctions for the same postage.

Within the USA, postage for total weights up to 13 oz ranges from $4.25 to $6.50 (including packing etc) regardless of destination. Above 13 oz, I will use “own box” Priority Mail. The rate, including packing, varies by destination from $7.25 to $9.50.

See my updated “Shipping Policy” for details.

Seller's terms and conditions

In addition to the standard terms and conditions, please note the following. Almost all IDs are visual. While in most cases the ID is obvious, there may be cases where it is not. If you are doubtful about a particular ID, please ask for more information. Or do not bid! Similarly, if you are not sure that the specimen meets your criteria, do not bid. I have tdone the best I can with the photos. Nevertheless, if you are not happy with a specimen for any reason, I will refund the bid price – but not the shipping costs (unless the fault is clearly mine) – if the specimen is returned. This policy applies even if analysis of the specimen shows that my ID was incorrect. When in doubt, ask - or don’t bid. Note that most crystals at MSH and Varennes are micros - even if on large specimens. Please pay attention to the stated sizes. Any customs duties, fees etc. are the responsibility of the buyer.
