Description

Neighborite is a very rare mineral at MSH. This specimen features several cubo-octahedral crystals of very unusual light yellow color. (Most neighborite crystals are dark reddish-brown.) The crystals are from a cavity in hornfels associated with the Poudrette pegmatite. Also in the cavity are small smoky quartz crystals, siderite, aegirine and “feldspar”. The downside is that this is a rather large “micro” and that some of the neighborite crystals are deep in the cavity and not easy to spot.

The first two pairs of photos (FOV 2.8 x 2.1 and 2.2 x 2.8 mm resp.) show the nicest neighborite crystals on the specimen. The larger crystal is about 1.1 mm wide and the smaller one is about 0.8 mm. The cubo-octahedral form of the smaller crystal is particularly evident. The weird crystal at the bottom of the second pair of photos is aegirine.  There is another yellow neighborite crystal nearby (out of view).

The next photo (FOV 2.5 x 205 mm) shows another group of neighborite crystals spanning ca 1.8 mm. The individual crystals are about 0.6 mm in diameter.

The next photo (FOV 5.7 x 3.8 mm) shows another yellow neighborite crystal (ca 0.8 mm) surrounded by smoky quartz, aegirine, and siderite. The siderite is 1.5 mm wide. This neighborite crystal (at center in the photo) is hard to spot. Also, the color of the siderite is confusingly similar to that of the neighborite.

The next pair of photos (FOV 2.0 x 3.6 mm) shows small, very pale, aegirine crystals from another small cavity. Through a scope, these crystals look nearly colorless. Because of this, they were analyzed via EDS, but, despite the very pale color, they seem to be just plain aegirine. (See the “Analysis” tab.)

Single item shipping weight (no case) is 6.3 oz (179 g). For shipments outside the USA, up to a total weight < 8 oz (225g), this can be combined with items from this or other auctions for the same postage.

Within the USA, postage increases by about $0.20 per ounce. Above 13 oz, I will use Priority Mail ($9.25 including packing).

Seller's terms and conditions

In addition to the standard terms and conditions, please note the following. Almost all IDs are visual. While in most cases the ID is obvious, there may be cases where it is not. If you are doubtful about a particular ID, please ask for more information. Or do not bid! Similarly, if you are not sure that the specimen meets your criteria, do not bid. I have tdone the best I can with the photos. Nevertheless, if you are not happy with a specimen for any reason, I will refund the bid price – but not the shipping costs (unless the fault is clearly mine) – if the specimen is returned. This policy applies even if analysis of the specimen shows that my ID was incorrect. When in doubt, ask - or don’t bid. Note that most crystals at MSH and Varennes are micros - even if on large specimens. Please pay attention to the stated sizes. Any customs duties, fees etc. are the responsibility of the buyer.
