Description

The best crystals of leucosphenite are probably those from MSH. It is a firly rare mineral here, found almost exclusively in the igneous breccia cavities. But this specimen is from a marble xenolith, which is an extremely rare occurrence.

The first pair of photos (FOV 3.8 x 2.3 mm) is a “top” view of the leucosphenite. Top to bottom, the leucosphenite spans 3.2 mm. The small dark crystals are (probably) magnesio-arfvedsonite. They are well terminated, and some have a beautiful deep “bottle green” color.

The second pair of photos (FOV 4.2 x 6.7 mm) is a “side” view of the pale blue leucosphenite (at top) as well as a well-terminated colorless pectolite crystal. In this view, the leucosphenite spans 3.1 x 3.1 mm. The pectolite crystal is 2.6 mm tall. (The leucophanite crystals are striated; the pectolite crystal is not.)

The third pair of photos (FOV 3.7 x 2.4 mm) shows the other “side” of the leucosphenite and the termination on the pectolite cryral.

The fourth pair of photos is a close-up (FOV 2.2 x 3.3 mm) of some of the magnesio-arfvedsonite crystals on the specimen. They are almost all <= 0.5 mm in length. (See the "Analysis" tab.)

The specimen is a large micro. It could probably be trimmed to “true” micro size without damaging the leucospenite. But you would lose some of the pectolite and magnesio-arfvedsonte crystals. More importantly, you would lose the distinctive matrix that clearly shows that this specimen is from marble xenolith, rather than the much more common igneous breccia.

Seller's terms and conditions

In addition to the standard terms and conditions, please note the following. Almost all IDs are visual. While in most cases the ID is obvious, there may be cases where it is not. If you are doubtful about a particular ID, please ask for more information. Or do not bid! Similarly, if you are not sure that the specimen meets your criteria, do not bid. I have tdone the best I can with the photos. Nevertheless, if you are not happy with a specimen for any reason, I will refund the bid price – but not the shipping costs (unless the fault is clearly mine) – if the specimen is returned. This policy applies even if analysis of the specimen shows that my ID was incorrect. When in doubt, ask - or don’t bid. Note that most crystals at MSH and Varennes are micros - even if on large specimens. Please pay attention to the stated sizes. Any customs duties, fees etc. are the responsibility of the buyer.
