Description

This specimen features several gemmy yellow genthelvite crystals along with some very interesting bastnaesite-(Ce) pseudomrohs. But there is also a large analcime crystal, terminated aegirine, fluorite, catapleiite, kupletskite, and natrolite/gonnardite – a min-MSH collection all in one specimen.

The first pair of photos (FOV 4.4 x 6.4 mm) shows several genthelvite crystals to about 4 mm on edge. The tan “sticks” are rhabdophane-(Ce).

The second pair of photos (FOV 4.3 x 6.4 mm) shows more genthelvite to 2 mm on edge. There are other genthelvite crystals on the specimen, but most are partly coated or encrusted by other minerals.

The third pair of photos shows a jumble of “spires” and prisms of (probable) bastnäsite-(Ce) pseudomorphs. It’s hard to tell which is the longest “crystal” in the photo, but the FOV is 6.9 x 4.3 mm.

Note: According to qualitative EDS (see the "Analysis tab"), the "spires" and prims are probably a Ce, La carbonate "such as" bastnäsite-(Ce).The ID isn't clear cut because the sample that was sent was embedded in silicates (hence the Si and Al in the scan), and because qualitative EDS isn't sufficient for something as complicated as this.  And, of course, the C can't actually be seen with EDS. The pinkish crystals are probably rhodochrosite, but they are not very sharply formed.

The fourth pair of photos (FOV 6.0 x 4.0 mm) shows a well terminate aegirine crystal about 3.8 mm long ,mostly included in analcime. Note that the tip looks dark red, whereas the embedded part looks black. A few smaller aegirine crystals are completely included (not shown). There are also some non-included terminated aegirine crystals.

The ninth photo (FOV 2.4 x 3.5 mm) shows a very pale blue fluorite crystal (2.2 mm) with an interesting habit. The white “hairpiece” is natrolite/gonnardite.

I didn’t have room for photos of the catapleiite or kupletskite, but there is nothing special about them. The tan catapleiite crystals are small, and the kupletskite crystals are just partial.

As show in the full-view photo, there are also much larger, but mostly broken, aegirine crystals and a large (3.8 cm) analcime crystal. The latter is contacted at the bottom and in the back. What you see in the photo is all there is. The bastnaesite-(Ce) is mostly in a cavity on the right side. The catapleiite is mostly at the top (both front and back).

Single item shipping weight (small box with MIN case) is 4.2 oz. Up to a total weight of 8 oz (225 g), this could be combined with other items from this or future auctions for the same postage. If you wish to keep an “open box”, let me know. Please see my "Shipping Policy" for details.

Seller's terms and conditions

In addition to the standard terms and conditions, please note the following. Almost all IDs are visual. While in most cases the ID is obvious, there may be cases where it is not. If you are doubtful about a particular ID, please ask for more information. Or do not bid! Similarly, if you are not sure that the specimen meets your criteria, do not bid. I have tdone the best I can with the photos. Nevertheless, if you are not happy with a specimen for any reason, I will refund the bid price – but not the shipping costs (unless the fault is clearly mine) – if the specimen is returned. This policy applies even if analysis of the specimen shows that my ID was incorrect. When in doubt, ask - or don’t bid. Note that most crystals at MSH and Varennes are micros - even if on large specimens. Please pay attention to the stated sizes. Any customs duties, fees etc. are the responsibility of the buyer.
