Description

This is not the biggest or best specimen of “leifite” from MSH. But the crystals (about 3-4 mm) are very attractive under a scope.

FOV in the first photo is 6.7 x 4.2 mm. These same crystals are shown from a slightly different angle in the next pair of photos. The fourth photo (FOV 4.6 x 3.8 mm) shows some of the terminations.

These crystals are also visible at the top of the first macro photo. In the center of that photo is kupletskite spanning about 1.2 x 1.0 cm. The kupletskite has a beautiful “burnished chestnut” color, but it is embedded in the matrix and only the top can be seen. Some of the crystals are damaged and/or encrusted, but as shown in the next photo (FOV 7.0 x 4.5 mm), a close-up of the best part, there are several beautifully striated crystals. I’m not sure I understand the morphology, but the striated parts appear to be the “sides” of the crystals.

The last photo shows the back of the specimen where two or three additional embedded sprays of leifite are visible at center right.

Note: Both leifite and eirikite are found at MSH. According to Horváth, analyzed specimens are about equal in number and many, if not most, specimens are very border-line in composition. Simple EDS was inconclusive on the specimens I sent for analysis. Therefore “leifite group” is the only safe label (although labeling specimens as ‘leifite, eirikite”, is probably accurate in most cases).

Single item shipping weight is 3.3 oz. If you are planning to hold an "open box" so as to reduce postage costs by combining items from a future auction, please note that USPS postage rates recently changed significantly.

Outside the USA, the stated postage and packing rate applies up to a total weight of 8 oz (225 g). It is no longer possible to save on postage by using a padded envelope.

Within the USA, there is a nominal increase of $0.20 for each additional ounce. Above 13 oz, I will use Priority Mail. Up to 16 oz, the “own box” Priority rate is $8.50 (including packing).

Please see my "Shipping Policy" for details.

Seller's terms and conditions

In addition to the standard terms and conditions, please note the following. Almost all IDs are visual. While in most cases the ID is obvious, there may be cases where it is not. If you are doubtful about a particular ID, please ask for more information. Or do not bid! Similarly, if you are not sure that the specimen meets your criteria, do not bid. I have tdone the best I can with the photos. Nevertheless, if you are not happy with a specimen for any reason, I will refund the bid price – but not the shipping costs (unless the fault is clearly mine) – if the specimen is returned. This policy applies even if analysis of the specimen shows that my ID was incorrect. When in doubt, ask - or don’t bid. Note that most crystals at MSH and Varennes are micros - even if on large specimens. Please pay attention to the stated sizes. Any customs duties, fees etc. are the responsibility of the buyer.
