Description

The Franklin Mine (strictly speaking the Buckwheat pit) is the type locality for cholorphoenicite and  co- type locality for zincite and leucophoenicite.

The first photo shows a small (0.9 mm), but sharp zincite crystal of typical hemimorphic pyramidal habit.

The second photo shows terminated chlorophoenicite crystals to about 0.7 mm. The crystals are somewhat (naturally) stained. In some other cavities (not on this specimen), the chlorophoenicite has turned completely black. This cavity also has another zincite crystal and some small leucophoenicite crystals.

Some of the leucophoenicite crytals are shown in the third photo (FOV 3.1 x 1.8 mm).  The crystal near center is about 0.6 mm tall. At its tip are a few tiny black (pseudo-)cubic pyrochroite crystals about 1/8 mm on edge. This photo also shows that the chlorophoenicite (lower left) is iridescent.

The fourth photo(FOV 3.2 x 1.9 mm)  shows the other zincite crystal (0.7 mm) on the left and some more leucophoenicite on the right.

The fifth photo (FOV 2.7 x 1.7 mm) shows a single tabular leucophoenicite crystal (1.2 mm), somewhat encrusted by zincite, with several sharp pyrochroite crystals at lower right.

This crystal can also be seen in the macro photo, just under the yellow arrow on the left. The zincite in the first photo is under the other arrow. The rest of the crystals shown in the other close-up photos are in the vug near the center in the macro photo.

This is a micro. You will need 30-50X to see these crystals properly.

Single item shipping weight 3.4 oz. If you are planning to hold an "open box" so as to reduce postage costs by combining items from a future auction, please note that USPS postage rates recently changed significantly.

Outside the USA, the stated postage and packing rate applies up to a total weight of 8 oz (225 g). It is no longer possible to save on postage by using a padded envelope.

Within the USA, there is a nominal increase of $0.20 for each additional ounce. Above 13 oz, I will use Priority Mail. Up to 16 oz, the “own box” Priority rate is $8.50 (including packing).

Seller's terms and conditions

In addition to the standard terms and conditions, please note the following. Almost all IDs are visual. While in most cases the ID is obvious, there may be cases where it is not. If you are doubtful about a particular ID, please ask for more information. Or do not bid! Similarly, if you are not sure that the specimen meets your criteria, do not bid. I have tdone the best I can with the photos. Nevertheless, if you are not happy with a specimen for any reason, I will refund the bid price – but not the shipping costs (unless the fault is clearly mine) – if the specimen is returned. This policy applies even if analysis of the specimen shows that my ID was incorrect. When in doubt, ask - or don’t bid. Note that most crystals at MSH and Varennes are micros - even if on large specimens. Please pay attention to the stated sizes. Any customs duties, fees etc. are the responsibility of the buyer.
