Description

Hodgkinsonite is a very rare mineral found only at the Franklin and Sterling Mines in NJ – both long closed. By far the best crystals and best colored specimens are from the Franklin Mine – the TL.

This Franklin specimen is essentially a micro, but it features several well terminated crystals of the most characteristic “church steeple” habit.

FOV in the first pair of photos is 3.4 x 7.0 mm. The visible portion of the crystal in the third photo is about 1.6 mm.

The macro photos show some larger crystals, including one that is more equant, but these either grow wall-to-wall in the cavity or are partly embedded. The exposed part of the largest xl, about 4 mm, can be seen in the full view photo near bottom center. This crystal is in the upper right corner of the close-up macro.

There is some unidentified material in the cavity – but I wouldn’t get too excited.

The color of the crystals proved difficult to capture in the micro photos. The color in the two macro photos is more accurate.

Crystals of hodgkinsonite were never abundant, and are rarely available now. Even massive material of good color is hard to come by.

Weight (with MIN case) 2.9 oz. Single item shipping weight 6.6 oz. Above 8 oz, additional items may incur nominal additional postage.

Seller's terms and conditions

In addition to the standard terms and conditions, please note the following. Almost all IDs are visual. While in most cases the ID is obvious, there may be cases where it is not. If you are doubtful about a particular ID, please ask for more information. Or do not bid! Similarly, if you are not sure that the specimen meets your criteria, do not bid. I have tdone the best I can with the photos. Nevertheless, if you are not happy with a specimen for any reason, I will refund the bid price – but not the shipping costs (unless the fault is clearly mine) – if the specimen is returned. This policy applies even if analysis of the specimen shows that my ID was incorrect. When in doubt, ask - or don’t bid. Note that most crystals at MSH and Varennes are micros - even if on large specimens. Please pay attention to the stated sizes. Any customs duties, fees etc. are the responsibility of the buyer.
