Description

This is a small specimen, but most of it consists of a crystal of cryolite about 9 x 6 x 5 mm. Overall, the crystal appears to be more or less sharply formed and transparent but frosted and “bumpy” (macro photos). Under a scope, some faces appear to be composed of numerous smooth, but slightly stepped, segments (top of first close-up). Other faces (second close-up) seem very smooth (bright areas) but have numerous hillocks or “warts”. Most large cryolite crystals at MSH are encrusted by zeolites. However, to me, the “warts” on this specimen look like a second generation of cryolite rather than an encrusting zeolite. But I am not sure. The crystal fluoresces pale blue-white – typical of “naked” cryolte at MSH. It sits on a bit of microcline with small sections of petersenite-(Ce) prisms replaced by synchysite-(Ce) (second macro photo). The specimen is from the Poudrette pegmatite, August 1997. (Peatite-(Y) and ramikite-(Y) were found a few days later.)

Weight (including MM box) 0.1 oz. Single item shipping weight 2.1 oz. Up to 4 oz, this can be combined with other items for the same postage. Alternatively, outside the USA, this can be shipped in a padded envelope for $7.

Seller's terms and conditions

In addition to the standard terms and conditions, please note the following. Almost all IDs are visual. While in most cases the ID is obvious, there may be cases where it is not. If you are doubtful about a particular ID, please ask for more information. Or do not bid! Similarly, if you are not sure that the specimen meets your criteria, do not bid. I have tdone the best I can with the photos. Nevertheless, if you are not happy with a specimen for any reason, I will refund the bid price – but not the shipping costs (unless the fault is clearly mine) – if the specimen is returned. This policy applies even if analysis of the specimen shows that my ID was incorrect. When in doubt, ask - or don’t bid. Note that most crystals at MSH and Varennes are micros - even if on large specimens. Please pay attention to the stated sizes. Any customs duties, fees etc. are the responsibility of the buyer.
