Description Tabs

Description
Locality:
Poudrette Quarry, Mont Saint-Hilaire, Québec, Canada
Size Range:
Miniature (4.5-7 cm)
Size:
3 × 4.5 × 1.8 cm
Description

This is a small, but fairly rich specimen of fibrous adamsite-(Y) with rémondite-(Ce). FOV in the first two photos is 4.6 x 6.9 mm and 4.6 x 6.8 mm resp. The rémondite shows some faces, but, apart from one tiny xl, it is just xl sections rather than terminated xls. In the photos, the rémondite looks orange/tan because tungsten lighting was used. In daylight or under fluorescent lighting it looks pale apple green. Note: Initially I mistook this for fibrous dawsonite because it leaves behind cubes of NaCl in HCl and, more importantly, shows no REE absorption lines. But EDS (last “photo”) shows that it is most likely adamsite-(Y) with perhaps some dawsonite mixed in. (There seems to be an unlabeled Al peak just below the main Y peak.) The visible REE lines for most Y minerals are actually due to traces of Ho and Er (not Y itself) and some Er does show in the EDS spectrum. So I probably just missed seeing these lines due to using a rather crude spectroscope. On the other hand, the rémondite has “blow your socks off” REE absorption. Weight 0.6 oz. Single item shipping weight (with case) 3.1 oz. Up to 4 oz, this can be combined with other items for the same postage. Can also be shipped without a case (0.5 oz).

Seller's terms and conditions

In addition to the standard terms and conditions, please note the following. Almost all IDs are visual. While in most cases the ID is obvious, there may be cases where it is not. If you are doubtful about a particular ID, please ask for more information. Or do not bid! Similarly, if you are not sure that the specimen meets your criteria, do not bid. I have tdone the best I can with the photos. Nevertheless, if you are not happy with a specimen for any reason, I will refund the bid price – but not the shipping costs (unless the fault is clearly mine) – if the specimen is returned. This policy applies even if analysis of the specimen shows that my ID was incorrect. When in doubt, ask - or don’t bid. Note that most crystals at MSH and Varennes are micros - even if on large specimens. Please pay attention to the stated sizes. Any customs duties, fees etc. are the responsibility of the buyer.
