Description

This is a lot consisting of two specimens; dawsonite on sodalite and "hellandite group" on phlogopite. The dimensions and weight given are for the dawsonite + sodalite specimen. The other specimen is very small - ca 6 x 6 x 2 mm.

The first photo (FOV 2.3 x 2.3 mm) is a close-up of the “hellandite”. It is the little off-white “fungus” on the top edge of dark brown phlogopite. It spans 0.55 mm You will need about 30X to see it as in the photo.

The next pair of photos (FOV 6.6 x 4.4 mm) shows pretty much the entire "hellandite" specimen, The colorless crystal is pectolite (a bit > 3 mm).

The “hellandite” was formerly thought to be tadzhikite-(Ce), but in the absence of single crystal XRD, it is not possible to say more than “hellandite group”. (See the information page for tadzhikite-(Ce) on the Mindat species list for MSH.)  In any case, it is a very uncommon mineral at MSH.

The next four photos show fairly deep blue sodalite with a few small, but well formed dawsonite crystals. One of the latter (0.7 mm) is shown in the fourth photo.

The sodalite is mostly crudely crystallized and essentially non-fluorescent. The crystal (1.2 mm) shown in the fifth photo is the best one (but it may actually be sodalite included analcime.) the last two photos show the entire specimen.

There are also some small rhombs of siderite/rhodochrosite. You will need 15-30X to view any of these crystals.

Combined shipping weight 3.9 oz. It may be advantageous for buyers outside the USA to hold an "open box" so as to reduce postage costs by combining with items from a future auction. Let me know, and I will generate a new “item only” invoice. Postage will be invoiced when all items are actually shipped.

Outside the USA, the stated postage and packing rate applies up to a total weight of 8 oz (225 g).

Within the USA, there is a nominal increase of $0.20 for each additional ounce. Above 13 oz, I will use Priority Mail. Up to 16 oz, the “own box” Priority rate is $8.00 (including packing).

Please see my "Shipping Policy" for details.

Seller's terms and conditions

In addition to the standard terms and conditions, please note the following. Almost all IDs are visual. While in most cases the ID is obvious, there may be cases where it is not. If you are doubtful about a particular ID, please ask for more information. Or do not bid! Similarly, if you are not sure that the specimen meets your criteria, do not bid. I have tdone the best I can with the photos. Nevertheless, if you are not happy with a specimen for any reason, I will refund the bid price – but not the shipping costs (unless the fault is clearly mine) – if the specimen is returned. This policy applies even if analysis of the specimen shows that my ID was incorrect. When in doubt, ask - or don’t bid. Note that most crystals at MSH and Varennes are micros - even if on large specimens. Please pay attention to the stated sizes. Any customs duties, fees etc. are the responsibility of the buyer.
