Sterling Mine, Ogdensburg, Sussex County, New Jersey, United States of America
Size Range:
Miniature (4.5-7 cm)
Size:
4 × 5 × 4.5 cm
Description

There is good coverage of friedelite on two sides of the specimen. However, the crystals are small – the longest edge shown in the first photo is 0.9 mm – and you will need 15-30X to see the xls clearly. Much of the friedelite is contacted, but there are several areas of good crystals. The one in the first photo spans 6.2 x 4.0 mm. FOV in the second photo is 7.1 x 4.2 mm, but the whole extent of this “patch” is about 20 mm and there are other, smaller, patches and cavities with good crystals. Some of the crystals look mottled or “sugary”, but – as can be seen by using reflections – the “top” faces are actually glass smooth. The matrix is a pinkish carbonate (weakly fluorescing – if at all) with small grains of franklinite. There are also some very pale green willemite prisms, mostly embedded in the friedelite surface and not visually distinctive, but also free growing in a small cavity. The latter are shown in the third photo. The front (terminated) crystal is a bit < 2 mm. In person, the crystals look nearly colorless and transparent. Weight 9.3 oz. Single item shipping weight 11.5 oz. Actual postage according to total weight of all items.

Seller's terms and conditions

In addition to the standard terms and conditions, please note the following. Almost all IDs are visual. While in most cases the ID is obvious, there may be cases where it is not. If you are doubtful about a particular ID, please ask for more information. Or do not bid! Similarly, if you are not sure that the specimen meets your criteria, do not bid. I have tdone the best I can with the photos. Nevertheless, if you are not happy with a specimen for any reason, I will refund the bid price – but not the shipping costs (unless the fault is clearly mine) – if the specimen is returned. This policy applies even if analysis of the specimen shows that my ID was incorrect. When in doubt, ask - or don’t bid. Note that most crystals at MSH and Varennes are micros - even if on large specimens. Please pay attention to the stated sizes. Any customs duties, fees etc. are the responsibility of the buyer.
