Description

This is an interesting specimen because it not only has some complex and lustrous micro xls of re-crystallized franklinite, but also allactite (a rare mineral even here) and a few baryte xls – rather uncommon in the zinc ore bodies. But it is really a large (and heavy) micro. The franklinite xls (first and second photos) are, resp., 1.3 and 1.6 mm (max). The allactite (third and fourth photos) spans more than 5 mm altogether. But it is hard to spot with the naked eye because it looks strangely “shaggy” on the outside, even though quite gemmy on the inside. The baryte xls (fifth photo) are <= 1.1 mm. There is another, slightly larger baryte xl nearby. There are also a few more complex franklinite xls. All the faces are equally lustrous and refelective but it is not possible to show that in just a couple of photos. You will need 10-30X to view any of these xls clearly.

The matrix is low calicite “red ore” – grains of reddish willemite with franklinite – anhedral except where re-crystallized. In the macro photo, the red arrow points to baryte.

If you have a good splitter, this could probably be turned into several “real” micros and/or thumbnails. But the association is not common and it is probably best to keep it as is.

Weight 7.7 oz. Single item shipping weight 9.8 oz. Up to 12 oz, this can be combined with other items for the same postage.

Seller's terms and conditions

In addition to the standard terms and conditions, please note the following. Almost all IDs are visual. While in most cases the ID is obvious, there may be cases where it is not. If you are doubtful about a particular ID, please ask for more information. Or do not bid! Similarly, if you are not sure that the specimen meets your criteria, do not bid. I have tdone the best I can with the photos. Nevertheless, if you are not happy with a specimen for any reason, I will refund the bid price – but not the shipping costs (unless the fault is clearly mine) – if the specimen is returned. This policy applies even if analysis of the specimen shows that my ID was incorrect. When in doubt, ask - or don’t bid. Note that most crystals at MSH and Varennes are micros - even if on large specimens. Please pay attention to the stated sizes. Any customs duties, fees etc. are the responsibility of the buyer.
