Buckwheat Mine, Franklin, Sussex County, New Jersey, United States of America

Miniature (4.5-7 cm)

3 × 5 × 1.5 cm

Description

Sharply formed ilmenite plates to ~ 2¼ mm. You will need 10-20X to view them clearly. This is from the camptonite dike that intruded the Franklin ore body in the Buckwheat mine. The xls occur in albite seams filled with calcite which has been etched away. Because the seams are thin, some of the ilmenite plates grow wall to wall and break when the seams are split. On this specimen, some of the larger aggregates are broken in part, but there are many very attractive unbroken xls.

FOV in the first photo is 6.5 x 3.5 mm; largest xl about 2 mm in maximum diameter. FOV in the second photo is 6.6 x 4.5 mm; largest xl is 2¼ mm.

This may not be “world class” ilmenite, but it is a pretty good example for Franklin. According to Dunn, the ilmenite xls in the camptonite dikes are 1-2 mm. So these are at or above the upper end of that range.

Seller's terms and conditions

In addition to the standard terms and conditions, please note the following. Almost all IDs are visual. While in most cases the ID is obvious, there may be cases where it is not. If you are doubtful about a particular ID, please ask for more information. Or do not bid! Similarly, if you are not sure that the specimen meets your criteria, do not bid. I have tdone the best I can with the photos. Nevertheless, if you are not happy with a specimen for any reason, I will refund the bid price – but not the shipping costs (unless the fault is clearly mine) – if the specimen is returned. This policy applies even if analysis of the specimen shows that my ID was incorrect. When in doubt, ask - or don’t bid. Note that most crystals at MSH and Varennes are micros - even if on large specimens. Please pay attention to the stated sizes. Any customs duties, fees etc. are the responsibility of the buyer.
