Description

A small specimen, with numerous black thorutite xls to about 0.8 mm. You will need 20-40X to view them. The xls are partly embedded in calcite and are not very imposing. But you will rarely see this mineral offered. World-wide, there are seven known localities but photos on Mindat only from Brazil and Franklin. This is from the initial find of thorutite on the Buckwheat dump made by Jim Rumrill ca 2000. Identified by John Cianciulli (curator of the Franklin Mineral Museum at the time).

There are three fairly distinct black xls of thorutite in the first photo. The largest (on the left) is 0.8 mm long. The xl on the right is about 2/3 mm long. The smallest (in the center) is only about 1/7 mm. Some of the other black blebs are very small or broken thorutite xls.

The second photo shows another xl about 2/3 mm long.

There are small thorutite xls, some broken, throughout the matrix. But they are not easy to spot until you know what you are looking for. I added an arrow (second photo) to help you get started.

Associated with orange-brown sphalerite and elongated pyrite. Some of the latter is tarnished and could be confused with the thorutite at first glance.

Weight 0.4 oz (including a TN box). Single item (small box) shipping weight 2.4 oz. Outseide the USA, this could be sent in a padded envelope for $7, Alternatively, it could be combined with other items, up to a total weight < 4 oz, for the same postage.

Seller's terms and conditions

In addition to the standard terms and conditions, please note the following. Almost all IDs are visual. While in most cases the ID is obvious, there may be cases where it is not. If you are doubtful about a particular ID, please ask for more information. Or do not bid! Similarly, if you are not sure that the specimen meets your criteria, do not bid. I have tdone the best I can with the photos. Nevertheless, if you are not happy with a specimen for any reason, I will refund the bid price – but not the shipping costs (unless the fault is clearly mine) – if the specimen is returned. This policy applies even if analysis of the specimen shows that my ID was incorrect. When in doubt, ask - or don’t bid. Note that most crystals at MSH and Varennes are micros - even if on large specimens. Please pay attention to the stated sizes. Any customs duties, fees etc. are the responsibility of the buyer.
