Shcherbakovite

Description Tabs

Description
Locality:
Khibiny Massif, Murmansk Oblast, Russian Federation
Size Range:
Miniature (4.5-7 cm)
Size:
3.8 × 6 × 3.6 cm
Largest Crystal:
1.00cm
Description

A rich specimen with Xl sections to 1 cm. These xls have apparently been etched out of natrolite (?), as a result of which some surfaces have turned white. But the gemmy amber color is well visible in many of the xls. The xls in the second and fifth photos (and some others) may have somewhat rounded, but real, terminations. However, I don’t know what scherbakovite terminations should look like, so I’m not sure. The scherbakovite bearing “vein” passes through the entire specimen, so potentially one could do some further exploration. (But the massive natrolite (?) appears to be very tough.)

The associated dark prisms are probably aegirine.

The xl in the first photo spans 1 cm. The largest xls in the next four photos are 3.5 mm, 2.8 mm, 3.5 mm and 2.7 mm resp. You will need 10-15X to view all but the largest xls.

The label is not more specific than “Khibina massif”. From the Fersman Museum (associates.)

Weight 2.5 oz. Single item shipping weight 2.6 oz. Up to a total weight <= 4 oz, this can be combined with other items for the same postage.

Seller's terms and conditions

In addition to the standard terms and conditions, please note the following. Almost all IDs are visual. While in most cases the ID is obvious, there may be cases where it is not. If you are doubtful about a particular ID, please ask for more information. Or do not bid! Similarly, if you are not sure that the specimen meets your criteria, do not bid. I have tdone the best I can with the photos. Nevertheless, if you are not happy with a specimen for any reason, I will refund the bid price – but not the shipping costs (unless the fault is clearly mine) – if the specimen is returned. This policy applies even if analysis of the specimen shows that my ID was incorrect. When in doubt, ask - or don’t bid. Note that most crystals at MSH and Varennes are micros - even if on large specimens. Please pay attention to the stated sizes. Any customs duties, fees etc. are the responsibility of the buyer.
