Description

Much to the displeasure of Franklin collectors, hancockite is know as epidote-(Pb) to the IMA.

The brick-red massive hancockite is, of course, naked eye visible. But the xls are = 0.3 mm long. You will need 30-60X to view them. FOV in the first photo is 3.4 x 2.0 mm. The second photo has FOV 6.1 x 4.2 mm. If you have a good enough scope, at high power you will see that many of the xls are well formed.

There are at least 3-4 good vugs on the specimen, and, if you are willing to commit sacrilege, the specimen could probably be divided into several “real” micros. There is also some dark brown hendricksite (rare zinc mica), glassy (massive) willemite with intense fluorescence and prolonged phosphorescence, and anhedral orange/brown andradite. These are visible in the macro photo. A very small colorless willemite prism can be seen in the first photo.

Franklin, specifically the Parker shaft, is still the only significant locality for hancockite (but material has been dispersed to at least three of the local dumps). Only two other localities are known.

Seller's terms and conditions

In addition to the standard terms and conditions, please note the following. Almost all IDs are visual. While in most cases the ID is obvious, there may be cases where it is not. If you are doubtful about a particular ID, please ask for more information. Or do not bid! Similarly, if you are not sure that the specimen meets your criteria, do not bid. I have tdone the best I can with the photos. Nevertheless, if you are not happy with a specimen for any reason, I will refund the bid price – but not the shipping costs (unless the fault is clearly mine) – if the specimen is returned. This policy applies even if analysis of the specimen shows that my ID was incorrect. When in doubt, ask - or don’t bid. Note that most crystals at MSH and Varennes are micros - even if on large specimens. Please pay attention to the stated sizes. Any customs duties, fees etc. are the responsibility of the buyer.
