Description

This is a lot of two specimens of synchysite-(Ce) of very different habits. The first consists of pseudomorphs of micaceous synchysite-(Ce) after petersenite-(Ce). This specimen is ca 1.5 x 1.5 x 2.0 cm. The second consists of a few typical-for-MSH tabular crystals on microlcline. This specimen is very small -  0.3 x 1.2 x 0.6 cm. Both specimens are micros, with a combined weight of 0.6 oz (17 g) including MM cases.

The first five photos show the pseudomorphs. This specimen is from the Poudrette pegmatite and was found in August 1997. For a much larger example, see p.57 of the Lapis special issue on MSH, July-August 2000.

The first pair of these photos shows a pseudomorph 7.2 mm long, growing essentially wall-to-wall in a microcline cavity with a bit of bladed albite.

The second pair of photos shows a smaller “terminated” crystal. The termination isn’t very distinct, but does retain some of the faces of the original petersenite-(Ce). The whit baldes in the center are albite. This material was rather abundant in 1997-8, but I was too picky. I only kept the “terminated” examples, so I wound up with only a few specimens. The stuff is somewhat brittle, and no doubt many of the pseudomorphs lost their terminations in the blasts and/or from vigorous hammering on the boulders. But I discovered later, that many of the petersenite crystals  had probably lost their terminates long before they were ‘morphed”.

The fifth photo shows the entire specimen.

The next four photos are for the specimen of “typical” synchysite-(Ce).

The largest synchysite-(Ce) crystal (0.85 mm) is shown in the first pair of these photos (FOV 1.4 x 1.5 mm). To see it as in these photos you need 50-60X, but it is clearly visible at lower magnifications (as shown in the fifth photo). There are a few smaller xls (far right in the fifth photo), and some small, coated, dolomite (or siderite) rhombs.

Single item shipping weight 2.5 oz. If you wish to combine this with other items from this or other auctions, outside the USA, the stated postage and packing rate applies up to a total weight of 8 oz (225 g).

Seller's terms and conditions

In addition to the standard terms and conditions, please note the following. Almost all IDs are visual. While in most cases the ID is obvious, there may be cases where it is not. If you are doubtful about a particular ID, please ask for more information. Or do not bid! Similarly, if you are not sure that the specimen meets your criteria, do not bid. I have tdone the best I can with the photos. Nevertheless, if you are not happy with a specimen for any reason, I will refund the bid price – but not the shipping costs (unless the fault is clearly mine) – if the specimen is returned. This policy applies even if analysis of the specimen shows that my ID was incorrect. When in doubt, ask - or don’t bid. Note that most crystals at MSH and Varennes are micros - even if on large specimens. Please pay attention to the stated sizes. Any customs duties, fees etc. are the responsibility of the buyer.
