Description

Massive garnierite, a green nickel ore which has formed as a result of lateritic weathering of ultramafic rocks (serpentinite, dunite, peridotite). Mostly a mixture of various Ni- and Ni-bearing magnesium layer silicates, associated with minor red-brown hematite stains.

Jules Garnier, a French geologist, published his work on the geology of New Caledonia in 1867, announcing the discovery of nickel there. Garnierite was named for Jules Garnier in a paper by A. Liversidge in 1874. It once was an important nickel ore, having a large weight percent NiO.

Apparently under modern reclassification this is no longer a species. It is considered a mix of green nickel minerals formed from weathering and may consist of williamseite, nepouite, and pimelite.
