Description

Coccinite is a rare mercury iodide, only found at a few localities worldwide. Here we have orange-red crusts on matrix, accompanied by cinnabar and an unidentified greenish mineral (pics 2, 7, 9), eventually it is the moschelite (also a mercury iodide) stated on the label. Surely worth a further analysis.

Landsberg/Obermoschel is an ancient mercury mining district and a highly sought-after locality in Germany. It is world famous for rare mercury minerals like the silver mercury amalgam moschellandsbergite. Mining finally ended in 1942.
These pieces come from a small group of 8 specimens from the collection of Dr. Nottes which were not registered in the collection book.
