Description

Looks like a meteorite but is in fact a Ni-Fe arsenide (Oregonite) plus rare terrestrial nickel-iron (josephinite resp. awaruite). Strongly magnetic. From the type locality "Josephine Creek placers, Josephine Creek Mining District, Josephine Co., Oregon, USA".

The specimen was originally purchased by F. Bauer in 1977 from Dr. Georg Gebhard in Osterode, Harz Mountains, Germany. Gebhardt is a well-known german mineral collector, Harz mountains expert and author of many books on mineralogy, localities and mining areas as well, e.g. 'Mineralienlexikon - Das Verzeichnis aller Mineralien', 'Lapis Mineralienverzeichnis', 'Harzer Bergbau und Minerale: St. Andreasberg', 'Tsumeb - Eine deutsch-afrikanische Geschichte', and many others.
