Description

Mosandrite is a Ti and REE-bearing silicate with a complex formula. Here we have brown, tabular crystals of mosandrite embedded in feldspar matrix. Accompanied by black mica. From the type locality. The orange-yellow mineral on the two last pics is likely wöhlerite.

Named in 1841 by Axel Joakim Erdmann in honor of Swedish chemist and mineralogist Carl Gustav Mosander (1797-1858) who had discovered and described the element Lanthanum in 1839. Mosandrite specimens may often shows signs of hydrothermally alteration. At the type locality (Låven, Langesundsfjorden, Norway) the alteration products may be a mixture of fluorite, pyrochlore, calcite, magnetite, pyrophanite and lorenzenite (cit. mindat).

Comes with beautiful antique Dr. Hübler, Altenburg label.
Brevig is a historical name associated with this locality.

Slightly radioactive due to content of U, Th and/or rare earth elements (appr. 1.0 micro Sv/h within spitting distance).
