Description

"Hornstein" (hornstone or chert) is an old german synonym for a silicaeous rock, tough, with conchoidal break (like the horn of a cow). Here is a specimen in reddish-brown and blueish colors. The "Tannenbaum Fundgrube" near Johanngeorgenstadt was first mentioned in 1791 and was mined for iron stone.

Comes with beautiful old label and on-glued corresponding number sticker from the former collection of metallurgical plant director Dr. O. Schmidt, Bergisch-Gladbach, Germany.
He deaceased 1923 or 1924, the collection (appr. 1200 specimens) was sold to the city of Bergisch-Gladbach in 1925, used as teaching resources in a secondary school then.
In 2016, after several movements, the remainders of the collection were sold to in order to support the city's fossil collection.
