Description

A very rare old time specimen: Copper is pseudomorphing azurite. The crystals are arranged to a rosette; it is nearly a floater, the only point of contact is where the number sticker was fixed.

Comes both with an Alex Franz and a newer Krantz label dated to the 60's or 70's, and on-glued corresponding number sticker.

Alex Franz was born in Göttingen in 1906 and was trained in optics at the Technical School in Jena, receiving his Master's Degree in 1929. He then joined his family's optics business in Hannover, managing it with the help of his brother in his early years, and thereafter by himself.
Franz became interested in minerals at an early age, and built a personal collection which unfortunately was lost during the chaos of the war years. Nevertheless, he built up a substantial new mineral collection following the war.
Franz died in Meerbusch, near Düsseldorf, on October 25, 2000. His collection was purchased by the mineral dealer Christian Rewitzer in Furth im Wald, and the specimens were then sold off individually.

I got a hint that the locality is very likely wrong; it is not Bisbee but the “Copper Rose Mine, San Lorenzo, Georgetown Mining District, Grant Co., New Mexico, USA”, a classic New Mexico locality. Complete floaters are quite rare today, and many of these fine pseudomorphs were collected by George English and A.E. Foote in the 1890's and were sold also to European collectors – labels of these both dealers were to be found occasionally within the old Krantz stock.
