Description

Rare locality specimen from Sardinia: A small gold bleb on massive ore matrix (enargite, tennantite?), visible under a loupe only.

At Furtei, a gold deposit was exploited from 1997 to 2003. The mine was reopened in 2006 but the mine consistently yielded lower returns than promised, and losses of $5 million in 2008 brought an end to the activities. Following unplanned closure, sulfide-rich materials and cyanide derived from mining and processing residues were left on site, which caused massive environmental problems.
