Description

Crystalline gold sheets, clearly visible with the naked eye, in white, drusy quartz matrix from this classic european locality.
Accompanied by brassy crystalline pyrite, some gold is directly associated with the pyrite (pic 3).

Jílové is the most important historical gold mining district in Bohemia with a tradition of gold mining for over 2,000 years. Classical shaft mining started as early as in the 13th century. The state took over the mining from private companies in 1936 and operated the district from 1939 until its closure in 1968. Over 3,000 mining sites are documented in an area of 35 square kms.
