Description

This alkali metal nitrate salt is also known as Chili saltpeter because worlds largest deposits of this salt can be be found in Chile. This is a sample from the ancient works on the chilean deposits of saltpeter. For more than a century, the world supply of the compound was mined almost exclusively from the Atacama desert in northern Chile until, at the turn of the 20th century, German chemists Fritz Haber and Carl Bosch developed a process for producing ammonia from the atmosphere on an industrial scale. Converting ammonia from this process into a synthetic Chilean saltpeter was possible, thus a dramatic decline in demand for sodium nitrate procured from natural sources took place since the 1940's.

The size is given for the glass flask. It is sealed against moisture with a cork stopper, I did not open it (nitratine is strongly hygroscopic).
