Description

Hedyphane is a relatively rare mineral of the Apatite Supergroup found in metamorphosed manganese deposits. The specimen hosts white hedyphane with in-grown brown schefferite and crystalline masses of pinkish rhodochrosite (?). The hedyphane shows intensive orange fluorescence under SW UV.

Hedyphane was first described from Långban, Filipstad, Värmland, Sweden and named in 1830 by Johann Friedrich August Breithaupt from the Greek ηδύς for "sweet" or "beautiful" and φαίνεσθαι, "to appear", in allusion to the typical appearance and luster of specimens.
Schefferite is a brown manganoan variety of diopside that frequently shows pronounced parting (IMA Subcommittee on Pyroxenes 1988), first described from Långban as well.

A fine and important historic example of this mineral association, comes with antique box with recorded locality.
