Description

Piece of eclogite rock consisting of dark green omphacite and red almandine garnet. Eclogite is a high-pressure, medium- to high-temperature metamorphic rock originally from depths > 45 km. The typical eclogite mineral assemblage is garnet (pyrope to almandine) plus clinopyroxene (omphacite).

Comes with beautiful old label and on-glued corresponding number sticker from the former collection of metallurgical plant director Dr. O. Schmidt, Bergisch-Gladbach, Germany. He deaceased 1923 or 1924, the collection (appr. 1200 specimens) was sold to the city of Bergisch-Gladbach in 1925, used as teaching resources in a secondary school then. In 2016, after several movements, the remainders of the collection were sold to in order to support the city's fossil collection.

The label means: "Omphazit (derber Pyroxen mit Almandin-Grant, zum Diallag gehörig) - Bayreuth" - "Omphacite (amorphous pyroxene with garnet var. almandine, belonging to diallagite) - Bayreuth"
