Description

White to cream-colored, crystalline petalite from the type locality 'Utö island, Södermanland, Sweden'. First described in 1800, from the Greek "petalon" for leaf, in allusion to the perfect basal cleavage, which is apparently visible. Accompanied by uncommon greenish-blue tourmaline var indicolite.

An important historic specimen which comes with an antique label of the collection of Christian Friedrich Bauersachs. He was born in 1767 near Bayreuth, Germany and began collecting minerals in 1792 for the board of mines of Clausthal (Harz mountains) as well for his private collection. In 1821 he sold his private collection of  > 6000 specimens to the mining college of Clausthal (unfortunately the old labels were removed from the specimens at that time. Today, the assignment of the labels is ensured using old catalogues and comparisons of handwritings). Bauersachs retired from service in 1830, after this date the mineral dealership of Dr. August Krantz was able to purchase some parts of the mining college collection.
Bauersachs deceased on Dec 14, 1845.

The label means: 'Petalit von gräulichweißer Farbe mit grünem Tourmalin von der Insel Utön in Schweden' (Petalite of greyish-white color with green tourmaline from Utön island in Sweden).
